Things we'd recommend, and why.

Each pick shows the research behind it, or says plainly when the evidence is only about the category, is low-certainty, or doesn't exist for that product. Prices change, so we don't list them here.

Sleep

Category evidenceMattress · medium-feel hybrid

Helix Midnight

A medium-feel hybrid. The research points to medium-firm, not to any brand.

Evidence: A systematic review of 39 studies found medium-firm mattresses promoted comfort, sleep quality, and spinal alignment. Category-level only; no brand was tested. Caggiari 2021 ↗

Heads-up: Not a back-pain treatment. Check the trial and return policy.

Category evidenceMattress · innerspring

Saatva Classic

A coil-on-coil innerspring sold in several firmness levels. Choose a medium-firm option to match the evidence.

Evidence: Same review: medium-firm linked to better comfort and sleep quality. Not brand-specific. Caggiari 2021 ↗

Heads-up: Not a back-pain treatment.

Category evidenceMattress · hybrid

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

A hybrid offered in soft, medium, and firm. The medium version fits the evidence.

Evidence: Same review: medium-firm linked to better comfort and sleep quality. Not brand-specific. Caggiari 2021 ↗
One RCT · adultsWeighted blanket

Bearaby weighted blankets

Knitted weighted blankets with no plastic beads.

Evidence: One randomized trial in 120 adults with insomnia and depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, or ADHD: a weighted chain blanket reduced insomnia severity more than a light blanket over 4 weeks. Bearaby itself was not tested. Ekholm 2020 ↗

Heads-up: Never for infants or young children.

Low-certainty evidenceSleep mask

Manta Sleep Mask

A blackout mask with adjustable eye cups that don't press on the eyes.

Evidence: A Cochrane review in hospital ICU patients: two small pooled studies linked earplugs and/or eye masks to more total sleep, rated low-quality evidence, and most studies measuring sleep objectively found no benefit. Not studied at home in healthy sleepers. Hu 2015 (Cochrane) ↗
Low-certainty evidenceEarplugs

Loop Dream earplugs

Soft, reusable earplugs shaped for side sleepers.

Evidence: Same Cochrane review as above: low-quality evidence, ICU setting. Hu 2015 (Cochrane) ↗

Heads-up: Don't use earplugs if you need to hear an alarm or a child.

Guideline-backed approachBook

A CBT-I self-help book

For example, Quiet Your Mind and Get to Sleep (Carney & Manber). The free VA "CBT-i Coach" app is another option.

Evidence: The American College of Physicians recommends CBT-I as the first treatment for chronic insomnia in adults (strong recommendation, moderate-quality evidence). The guideline covers CBT-I, not this specific book. ACP 2016 ↗ · CBT-i Coach (free) ↗

Heads-up: Best done with a clinician if insomnia is long-lasting.

Comfort item · weak evidenceSound machine

Hatch Restore 3

A bedside sound machine with a sunrise light and alarm.

Evidence: Reviews of steady background noise as a sleep aid rate the evidence low to very low. We list it for masking noise, not as a treatment. Sunrise-light claims not checked. Riedy 2021 ↗ · Capezuti 2022 ↗

Heads-up: Keep the volume low, especially near babies.

Heads-up: Clean it as the maker directs; dirty humidifiers can grow mold.

What we don't recommend

Sleep

  • Melatonin and other sleep supplements. We don't list supplements. One lab analysis of 31 melatonin supplements found the actual melatonin ranged from 83% less to 478% more than the label, and 8 contained serotonin. Erland 2017 ↗
  • "Healing frequency" audio and gadgets (528 Hz, Solfeggio, binaural-beat "brainwave" claims). We don't list products sold on these claims.
  • Sleep trackers and smart rings sold as a way to sleep better. Sleep researchers have described patients whose focus on tracker data turned into a perfectionistic quest for ideal sleep, which they named "orthosomnia" (case reports). Baron 2017 ↗
  • Blue-light-blocking glasses. A 2023 Cochrane review of 17 trials found they may not ease eye strain from computer use, and their effects on sleep were unclear, with mixed results. Singh 2023 (Cochrane) ↗
  • Mouth tape. A 2025 systematic review of 10 studies found a potentially serious risk of harm for people taping their mouths without medical guidance, and clinical benefit still unproven. Rhee 2025 ↗

Skin

  • Claims to prevent eczema in babies. A large trial and a Cochrane review found daily moisturizing in infancy did not prevent eczema. BEEP 2020 ↗ · Kelleher 2022 (Cochrane) ↗ We also don't list anything that claims to cure eczema.
  • Fragrance or essential oils. Dermatologists advise fragrance-free products because fragrance can make eczema flare. AAD ↗
  • Silk "therapeutic" eczema clothing. In the CLOTHES trial (300 children aged 1–15 with moderate to severe eczema), silk garments worn for 6 months were unlikely to add benefit over standard care. Thomas 2017 ↗
  • Water softeners sold for eczema. In the SWET trial in children, ion-exchange water softeners gave no additional benefit over usual care. Thomas 2011 ↗
  • Products with recalls or FDA warnings. Our policy: they're left out.

Educational, not medical advice. See our disclosures.
